Shamila Gopalan – Judge
Welcome to the Pause Awards show, where we invite past winners and future judges to talk about their journeys, inspirations and lessons learned in their professional careers. And beyond.
In this episode, George Hedon, Founder of Pause Fest and Awards, speaks with the CEO & Founder at HerWit, Sharmila Gopalan.
Shamila is an entrepreneur and a corporate leader who has been building businesses independently and within Fortune 500 firms across the globe for over 25 years, working for CNN, Fox and NatGeo in Asia.
“One of the great things that I had after leaving CNN and starting my business is the very strong network that I have built. That trust and confidence in me as a person and entrepreneur has elevated me and allowed me to overcome the lack of a big brand behind me.”

We spoke about the Pause Awards and which categories Shamila prefers the most.
“INDI AWARDS because it looks at indigenous or ethnic businesses and the impact they are making within their own communities and society as a whole, leading to the creation of role models within these communities.”
We mostly spoke about diversity and inclusion; Shamila supports female founders and minority (BIPOC) entrepreneurs.
“Migrants often feel they have to work ten times more than locals, and also the next generation, the children of migrants, feel the same pressure to excel. The concept of ‘Black Excellence’ could be compared with people of colour too; we are also expected to have a certain level of excellence.”
